I was in Cath Kidston earlier, just mooching around on a family jaunt around town, when my I spied the above promotional card.
I couldn’t help but see this as a sign for our contemporary way of living; the idea that we “need” more stuff. The question is: Do we really?
We live in a world where we are running out of carpets to sweep our rubbish under. The landfills are bursting at the seams and animal habitats are being infiltrated with our detritus. Does the natural world need this? I’d say not.
It’s not just the impact on the ecology, either. There is a “spiritual” element here, as well. I don’t just mean that in a religious sense, but in a “human spirit” sense. In this modern world of social networks – Oh the irony – the thing we need, more than filling our lives with more stuff, is for human beings to come together and find happiness through our connectedness.
But, what do I know? I’m sure the high street has a lot of great solutions for modern living.
